1996 Tickle Me Elmo Talking Plush
1996 Tickle Me Elmo Talking Plush

Year: 1996 (with ©1995 tag)
Manufacturer: Tyco Item 62175
Condition: Excellent condition Elmo and very good condition box. Hardly any self wear.
First edition vintage collectable

The Tickle Me Elmo talking plush was the “must have” toy in 1996. The scarcity of the toy led to a shopping frenzy, leading to news stories about fights and shoving matches to get an Elmo before he sold out. Some Tickle Me Elmos were re-sold online and in newspapers for up to $1500.00 ea. by the end of 1997.

When you actually get your hands on a Tickle Me Elmo, you’ll see why everyone wanted one. Elmo laughs when his tummy is pressed, saying “that tickles!” in his instantly recognizable voice. Press a second time and he laughs longer. Press a third time and Elmo vibrates, shaking and laughing for an extended time. It never fails to bring a smile to anyone’s face. See video below.

This is a first edition Elmo in excellent condition that has been played with only a few times. He’s soft and cuddly and his fur is like new. Elmo’s voice mechanism is loud and clear, and the vibration feature is strong! Finding a Tickle Me Elmo with the original tag is somewhat rare. Instructions included in the box start by telling the parent to immediately cut off and remove the tag. The original Tyco tag is still on this Elmo, and actually has a copyright date of 1995, which definitely makes it a first edition. The instructions also tell the parent to discard a mechanism which allows customers to try out Elmo on the shelves. Both original tags are still attached, and the original instructions are in the box, too.

The box measures 5″ x 8″ x 16″ and is in very good condition with some minor wrinkles. It’s nice enough to display or give as a retro gift. Item was removed from original packaging to put in batteries and for photography.

Yeah baby! It’s the one and only Austin Powers, nearly naked with a chest full of curly hair. Wearing only Union Jack underwear, Austin is totally shagadelic! This toy made the news in 1999 when some found the text on the package and the randy phrases a little too “adult” for children. There were multiple versions. This one has Austin saying “Do I make you horny baby, do I?” on the front, and includes a sexy dictionary, along with a mirror, a martini glass and olive on a stirrer. The martini glass and olive stirrer were very small parts, and removed from later versions because of the choking hazard. A second version was made with different phrasing (see other model by clicking here).

Austin is about 6” tall, and in his original packaging, which is in mint condtion. Mike Meyers provides the voice, which is in the base. The tab has never been pulled on either version, so it should speak when removed, but it’s not guaranteed. (Why would you ever open it anyway baby?)
